Islamic (swap-free) accounts
Admin fees, holding rules, and symbols that still accrue.
In conventional forex trading, holding a position past the 5:00 PM EST daily rollover incurs an overnight financing charge or credit, known as a swap. Because these swaps are based on interest rate differentials, they strictly violate the Islamic finance prohibition against Riba (interest). To accommodate Muslim traders, brokers offer "Swap-Free" or "Islamic" accounts—but these accounts often come with hidden structural costs you need to verify before depositing.
1. How Brokers Replace the Swap
To maintain liquidity provider relationships without charging you interest, top-tier brokers typically employ one of two compliant models:
- The Flat Administration Fee: A fixed nightly dollar amount is charged per lot held. For example, holding 1 lot of EUR/USD might cost a flat $5.00 administrative fee per night instead of a variable interest rate.
- The Spread Markup: Some brokers offer zero overnight fees permanently but slightly increase the bid-ask spread on your trades to front-load their operational costs.
2. Watch Out for "Grace Periods"
Many brokers advertise "100% Swap-Free" conditions, but bury a critical clause in their PDF disclosures: the grace period.
| Asset Class | Typical Grace Period | What Happens Next? |
|---|---|---|
| Major Forex (EUR/USD) | 5 to 10 Days | A nightly flat admin fee (e.g., $5 - $10 per lot) begins to accrue. |
| Gold (XAU/USD) | 3 to 5 Days | A heavy admin fee applies (can exceed $30+ per lot per night). |
| Exotics / Crypto CFDs | 0 Days (No Grace) | Admin fees apply immediately on the first night of rollover. |
3. Instrument Exclusions
An Islamic account designation rarely applies to every asset on the platform. When you switch to a swap-free account, you must check the broker's specific "Islamic Asset List."
- Exotic Pairs: Pairs like USD/TRY or USD/MXN carry massive underlying interest rate differentials. Brokers often exclude them entirely from swap-free status, meaning standard interest swaps will still apply if you trade them.
- Cryptocurrencies: Due to extreme volatility, holding digital assets like Bitcoin CFDs overnight frequently incurs immediate administrative penalties, completely bypassing any grace periods.
4. How to Verify True Sharia Compliance
Do not assume an account is halal just because a broker labeled it "Islamic."
- Look for the Fatwa: Truly dedicated Islamic brokers will have their account structures audited and certified by an independent Sharia supervisory board.
- Avoid Disguised Interest: If a broker's "administrative fee" fluctuates daily based on central bank interest rates rather than remaining a flat, transparent service charge, it is likely just Riba disguised under a different name.
